But getting HR right is essential for protecting your business and staying compliant in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Business owners are focused on running their business, winning work, managing cash flow and keeping clients happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HR tends to sit in the background\u2026 until something goes wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when it does, it\u2019s rarely small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It might be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">an employee raising a grievance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">someone going off sick long term<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">a dispute about pay or hours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">or a situation that suddenly feels uncomfortable and difficult to manage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that point, many businesses realise they don\u2019t have the foundations in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 5 HR risks I see most often in growing businesses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. No proper contracts or outdated documents<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lot of businesses either:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">don\u2019t have contracts at all, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">are using something they found online years ago<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This creates risk around:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">pay and working hours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">holiday entitlement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">notice periods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">expectations and behaviour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without clear documentation, everything becomes open to interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. \u201cWe\u2019ll deal with it if it happens\u201d approach<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the biggest risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Issues like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">poor performance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">lateness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">conduct problems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">are often left too long because no one wants confrontation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time action is taken, the situation has escalated and becomes harder to manage properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. No structure around absence or performance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there\u2019s no clear process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">sickness can become inconsistent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">performance issues go undocumented<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">decisions can look unfair or reactive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where businesses become exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consistency matters more than people realise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Lack of clarity for managers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many small businesses, managers have never been trained to manage people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re good at their job\u2026 but not necessarily confident handling:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">difficult conversations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">conflict<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">performance issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This leads to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">inconsistency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">avoidance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">or handling things informally that should be structured<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5.
